MacGuinnes is safe and healing thanks to you!

In the midst of rising challenges, we took in our fourth local owner surrender in the past 30 days. While we primarily focus on international rescues, we also extend our aid to local dogs in need, despite our current financial medical bill strain. We received an urgent call to rescue an 11-pound and 2 year old Shihpoo named “MacGuiness,” brought to our attention by the compassionate team at @vetcototalcare and @petco in NYC. MacGuiness arrived in a heartbreaking state, with a rubber band tightly wound around his ear, causing severe pain and leading to necrotic damage. The vet thought it was on his ear for months. The damage was so extensive that his ear required immediate amputation. We swiftly committed to his surgery and full veterinary care, unable to turn away from his urgent need. We knew he has lived in severe pain for quite some time.

MacGuinness has now recovered from surgery and is on his way to his foster home! Big thanks to everyone who donated, shared his story, and showed him love and support. Your donations enabled him to get the vet support he needed! We are so thankful for his vet team @vetcototalcare in Union Square and @petco store manager Jason for alerting us and helping us intake him into our rescue. Also, @saecom__0522 for stepping up without hesitation to foster him. There will be no more painful or dark days for this lovely boy. Only joy and a life of happiness. We will be taking Foster-to-Adopt applications for this sweet boy. Thank you for being a part of his happy ending.

A Milestone in Compassion: Emptying Hongseong-gu Shelter

In an awe-inspiring display of unity and compassion, Korean K9 Rescue and our 12 partner organizations have achieved what once seemed impossible: the complete clearing of a city shelter in Hongseong-gu, South Korea. This historic event marks the first time a Korean shelter has been entirely emptied, heralding a new chapter in the fight against animal neglect and abuse.

Within the walls of the shelter were 105 souls, each with a story of resilience. Some of these dogs, burdened with years of neglect and chained without hope, have now found freedom. Others, battling diseases like parvo, faced daunting odds against adoption in Korea. But today, thanks to our collective efforts and the tireless work of our dedicated ‘Lucy’s Law’ team, these dogs are stepping into a brighter future. Our hearts swell with gratitude for the unyielding support from volunteers and advocates in Korea, New York City, and Los Angeles. Your belief in our cause is the driving force behind these miracles.

However, our mission doesn’t end here. These precious lives still need your support. As we move into the crucial phase of providing necessary veterinary care and rehabilitation, we rely on your generosity more than ever. Your donations can pave the way for these dogs to find the loving homes they deserve. Together, let’s continue to make history and transform lives. We encourage you to join us in this journey by donating, fostering, volunteering, or adopting. Every action counts towards giving these dogs the loving future they’ve always deserved.

What we’ve witnessed in Hongseong-gu is nothing short of remarkable: a shelter that once echoed with the barks of 105 hopeful hearts, now silent. It’s a poignant reminder of what can be achieved when compassion and collaboration come together. Our team at Korean K9 Rescue was honored to welcome 13 of these beautiful beings into our Bundang center, providing them a safe haven and the first step towards a loving forever home. This achievement isn’t just ours; it belongs to every partner, supporter, and animal lover who stood by us. Your donations, shares, and words of encouragement are invaluable, keeping our spirits high and our mission moving forward. We extend our deepest thanks to each and every one of you. Together, we’re not just saving lives; we’re nurturing hope, one dog at a time.

Victory for Dogs: South Korea Bans the Dog Meat Trade by 2027

January 9th, 2024

Bundang-gu, Seongnam-si, South Korea—  In a groundbreaking decision that marks a significant victory for animal rights, South Korea’s General Assembly has overwhelmingly voted to ban the dog meat trade. There were 210 attendees; 208 voted in favor of the ban, while 2 abstained, showcasing a near-unanimous agreement on this critical issue.

Set to be enforced from 2027, this legislation signifies a pivotal shift in South Korea’s approach to animal welfare. Dog meat farmers and slaughterers will face legal consequences for their actions, encouraging a move towards more humane practices. Notably, business owners who proactively cease operations by 2027 will avoid penalties, a move that incentivizes early compliance and reflects a balanced approach to enforcing this new law.

As advocates for compassion and change, we at Korean K9 Rescue stand firm in our commitment against animal cruelty. This legislative change is a monumental step forward, symbolizing a future where dogs are respected and treated as sentient beings, not commodities. It’s a future where the inherent dignity of all living creatures is acknowledged and upheld.

This historic change is the culmination of a decade of tireless advocacy, campaigning, and awareness-raising by animal rights organizations and activists worldwide. The success of this movement underscores the power of collective action and the global call for more ethical treatment of animals.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to each and every supporter who has stood with us in this fight. Your voices, actions, and contributions have been instrumental in reaching this momentous achievement. As we look ahead, we remain vigilant and dedicated to continuing our efforts to ensure the full implementation of this ban and to advance the cause of animal rights.

The journey towards a dog meat-free Korea is in sight, and while significant challenges still lie ahead, we celebrate this victory and the progress it represents. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue our advocacy and work towards a more compassionate world. Your ongoing support is more critical than ever as we embark on the next phase of our mission.

Andrew from Rescue Train Repeat Trained our Bundang Team!

Today marks the beginning of an exciting journey in dog training at our Korean K9 Rescue (KK9R) facility! We’re thrilled to have Andrew, a renowned dog trainer from New York, joining our dedicated team. His expertise, especially with our cherished Jindo mix breed, is invaluable as we enhance our training techniques. Andrew is not just a trainer but also a proud adopter from KK9R, bringing a unique perspective to our mission.

Our first day was filled with intensive training, focusing on essential skills like refining leash techniques, instilling stillness, and improving movement. This is especially crucial for our trauma dogs, who require extra care and patience. Our goal is to ensure each dog is fully prepared for a loving forever home, equipped with the skills to adapt and flourish.
We also want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to @rifrufqueens for their incredibly generous donation of leashes, harnesses, jackets, and boots. This support is vital in providing the best care and training for our dogs.

As we continue this training journey, we’re reminded of the power of collaboration and community in making a significant impact in the lives of rescue dogs. Each step we take brings our furry friends closer to finding their forever homes, where they’ll receive the love and care they deserve.

Stay tuned for more updates as we progress through this transformative training program. Together, with the support of dedicated trainers like Andrew and generous donors, we’re not just rescuing dogs; we’re giving them a new lease on life.

We helped rescue 11 Tosa Inus at Sejong City Assembly!

Last week, in a heart-wrenching act of cruelty, the dog meat farmers’ association in Korea used eleven gentle Tosa Inus in a disturbing display of retaliation in Korea. These majestic dogs, often weighing over 130lbs when fully grown, were abandoned in front of the Sejong city assembly, trapped in cages so small they couldn’t even stand.

While the impending ban on dog meat in Korea is a monumental step forward, the journey towards complete eradication of this practice is fraught with challenges. Our team stepped in to rescue three of these suffering souls, who had been subjected to unimaginable torment. They are now safely in our care, receiving the love and attention they desperately need. The remaining dogs are being cared for by our dedicated allies.

Our facilities are already at full capacity, but we couldn’t turn away from these noble beings in their time of need. It’s our mission to rescue and rehabilitate these dogs, providing them a chance to find loving forever homes.

We urge you to join us in this mission. Your donation today can help us continue our rescue efforts and provide for these dogs’ needs. Together, we can bring light into the darkest corners of their lives and show them the kindness they have always deserved. Please donate and consider adopting one of these majestic souls to make a real difference.
