Victory for Dogs: South Korea Bans the Dog Meat Trade by 2027

January 9th, 2024

Bundang-gu, Seongnam-si, South Korea—  In a groundbreaking decision that marks a significant victory for animal rights, South Korea’s General Assembly has overwhelmingly voted to ban the dog meat trade. There were 210 attendees; 208 voted in favor of the ban, while 2 abstained, showcasing a near-unanimous agreement on this critical issue.

Set to be enforced from 2027, this legislation signifies a pivotal shift in South Korea’s approach to animal welfare. Dog meat farmers and slaughterers will face legal consequences for their actions, encouraging a move towards more humane practices. Notably, business owners who proactively cease operations by 2027 will avoid penalties, a move that incentivizes early compliance and reflects a balanced approach to enforcing this new law.

As advocates for compassion and change, we at Korean K9 Rescue stand firm in our commitment against animal cruelty. This legislative change is a monumental step forward, symbolizing a future where dogs are respected and treated as sentient beings, not commodities. It’s a future where the inherent dignity of all living creatures is acknowledged and upheld.

This historic change is the culmination of a decade of tireless advocacy, campaigning, and awareness-raising by animal rights organizations and activists worldwide. The success of this movement underscores the power of collective action and the global call for more ethical treatment of animals.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to each and every supporter who has stood with us in this fight. Your voices, actions, and contributions have been instrumental in reaching this momentous achievement. As we look ahead, we remain vigilant and dedicated to continuing our efforts to ensure the full implementation of this ban and to advance the cause of animal rights.

The journey towards a dog meat-free Korea is in sight, and while significant challenges still lie ahead, we celebrate this victory and the progress it represents. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue our advocacy and work towards a more compassionate world. Your ongoing support is more critical than ever as we embark on the next phase of our mission.

Andrew from Rescue Train Repeat Trained our Bundang Team!

Today marks the beginning of an exciting journey in dog training at our Korean K9 Rescue (KK9R) facility! We’re thrilled to have Andrew, a renowned dog trainer from New York, joining our dedicated team. His expertise, especially with our cherished Jindo mix breed, is invaluable as we enhance our training techniques. Andrew is not just a trainer but also a proud adopter from KK9R, bringing a unique perspective to our mission.

Our first day was filled with intensive training, focusing on essential skills like refining leash techniques, instilling stillness, and improving movement. Our goal is to ensure each dog is fully prepared for a loving forever home, equipped with the skills to adapt and flourish.
We also want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to @rifrufqueens for their incredibly generous donation of leashes, harnesses, jackets, and boots. This support is vital in providing the best care and training for our dogs.

We helped rescue 11 Tosa Inus at Sejong City Assembly!

Last week, in a heart-wrenching act of cruelty, the dog meat farmers’ association in Korea used eleven gentle Tosa Inus in a disturbing display of retaliation in Korea. These majestic dogs, often weighing over 130lbs when fully grown, were abandoned in front of the Sejong city assembly, trapped in cages so small they couldn’t even stand.

While the impending ban on dog meat in Korea is a monumental step forward, the journey towards complete eradication of this practice is fraught with challenges. Our team stepped in to rescue three of these suffering souls, who had been subjected to unimaginable torment. They are now safely in our care, receiving the love and attention they desperately need. The remaining dogs are being cared for by our dedicated allies.

Our facilities are already at full capacity, but we couldn’t turn away from these noble beings in their time of need. It’s our mission to rescue and rehabilitate these dogs, providing them a chance to find loving forever homes.

We urge you to join us in this mission. Your donation today can help us continue our rescue efforts and provide for these dogs’ needs. Together, we can bring light into the darkest corners of their lives and show them the kindness they have always deserved. Please donate and consider adopting one of these majestic souls to make a real difference.

These lucky pups have journeyed all the way to New York, being welcomed into loving families across the diverse boroughs of Queens, Brooklyn, and Manhattan.

Let’s continue to make a positive impact together. This Giving Tuesday, we encourage you to support our mission. Your donations are crucial in helping us save and care for more dogs, ensuring they too find their perfect match in a loving home.

Their team visited our rescue center in Bundang, Korea, capturing the essence of our mission: rescuing, rehabilitating, and preparing dogs for a new life in loving forever homes, primarily in the US.

These dogs, each with a tale of resilience, have found new beginnings in bustling cities like New York, with its dynamic neighborhoods of Queens and Brooklyn, as well as the vibrant streets of Manhattan. Witnessing their transition from past trauma to present joy is profoundly rewarding for our team.

We’re especially grateful to two of our remarkable adopters, @millie_thebkgirl from Brooklyn and @ravi_thelowrider from Boston. Their stories of adoption are a testament to the boundless love and healing that these dogs bring into our lives.
Our work is fueled by the generosity of supporters like you. This Giving Tuesday, we invite you to continue this journey with us. Your contributions, regardless of size, are pivotal in reaching and rescuing more dogs in need, ensuring they find their way to homes filled with love and care.

BREAKING NEWS: South Korea's National Assembly's plan to ban dog meat trade by 2027!

November 17th, 2023

Bundang-gu, Seongnam-si, South Korea— In a landmark proposal that marks a significant milestone in animal welfare, the South Korean government has announced its commitment to end dog meat consumption by 2027. This historic proclamation has been met with widespread approval by animal rights groups, including Korean K9 Rescue, an organization dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating dogs from South Korea and placing them with loving forever families in the United States. Check out our new video, just released here.

The initiative was revealed in a tri-party meeting attended by key South Korean government officials on Nov 17th in Congress, outlining a comprehensive roadmap to eradicate the dog meat trade within the next four years. This includes a law set to be passed this year that will enforce the cessation of dog breeding, slaughter, distribution, and sale for consumption purposes.

Korean K9 Rescue hails this as a pivotal step forward in undoing centuries of inhumane treatment of dogs, which has
persisted despite growing political and social pressure. The Rescue’s efforts in Bundang, South Korea, align closely with the government’s new plan, focusing on rescuing hundreds of dogs annually from the streets, dog meat farms, high-kill shelters, and puppy mills. All of these dogs face the dangers of the dog meat trade in South Korea.

“Today represents a significant triumph for the welfare of animals, a testament to the relentless efforts and unwavering commitment of Korean K9 Rescue and its allies,” stated Gina Boehler from Korean K9 Rescue. “The decisive action taken by the South Korean government to prohibit a tradition responsible for the deaths of millions of dogs marks a pivotal win in animal rights. Yet, there’s an urgency for expediting this transition; the three years ahead will pose the most challenging rescue operations we have ever faced.”

The government’s strategy includes substantial changes such as removing dogs from the livestock category and imposing severe penalties for illegal activities involving dog meat, with up to three years of imprisonment or fines up to 30 million won. By July 2024, entities involved in the dog meat trade must submit detailed plans for winding down their operations, with a complete ban on establishing new dog farms or slaughterhouses by 2027, in order to receive a government subsidy based on income generated from their cruel industry.

“In light of the impending legislative changes, we find ourselves in a critical countdown to save and safeguard as many dogs as possible from an industry potentially facing a final, desperate expansion. Anticipated government subsidies based on farm size may fuel a rise in the number of dog farms and slaughterhouses between now and 2027. However, with the unwavering support of our community, we have the power to transform this period into an era of transformation and healing rather than one of anguish,” Gina of Korean K9 Rescue conveyed. “As we embrace this legislative milestone, our commitment is stronger than ever. Korean K9 Rescue is resolute in its mission to rescue, rehabilitate, and
rehome dogs in distress.”

Korean K9 Rescue extends its gratitude to the global community for their support and to the South Korean government for taking a stand for animal rights. Korean K9 Rescue pledges to persist in its advocacy and rescue efforts until every dog meat farm is shut down and every dog has the chance to live a happy and free life. We’ve saved over 3,500+ dogs from the dog meat trade, high kill shelters, puppy mills, stray, and abandoned since 2017 and have given them all a second chance in a loving home.
